Cautious start for Fender

The opening rounds of the Ginetta GT5 Challenge got underway this weekend at a very gloomy Oulton Park, and in true Ginetta GT5 Challenge style, the packed grids put on some fantastic races, with two different winners from the two races.

As the green flag was waved for the first qualifying session of the season, a strong twenty-six grid became face to face with their competition for the first time. A daunting prospect for experienced racers, so spare a thought for Angus who was competing in his G40 for the first time. However, he continued to improve on the damp circuit and found himself 20th on the grid.

The first race began with rain lingering in the air, and it was Ryan Hadfield who took the lead into Old Hall Corner following a rocket start off the line. Fender drove within himself, his main focus was finishing in the difficult conditions and getting a feel for the new environment and the competitive nature of the competition. As the chequered flag was deployed he had progressed to 17th but most importantly he had kept it on the island.

Changeable conditions just before the second race of the day gave Fender some more to think about, the team opted for wet tyres and as the lights went out Angus found out just how close the racing can be, having his left-hand mirror ‘adjusted’. The conditions proved too much for some but Angus kept his nerve and the tyre choice proved correct as he finished 15th.

The conditions meant there were several red flags during the course of the day, and the final race of the weekend and round three of the championship were postponed until later in the season. Angus now looks towards his next outing at Rockingham Motor Speedway on 29/30 April.
