Ginetta GT5 Championship

It’s been a busy period in the GBR race awning over the past few months, with plenty of ups and downs for the team and the driver, Morgan Quinn #12. After a promising & wet start to the season at Oulton Park, the Ginetta GT5 Challenge moved on to Rockingham. Testing had shown Quinn could make his mark here, improving his lap times from the previous year almost every time he got out on the circuit.

In challenging conditions Morgan Quinn finished 8th in both races 1 & 2, the reverse grid draw for Race 3 resulted in Quinn starting on pole. He was caught looking in his mirrors into turn one and dropped to second place with his former driving coach the hard-charging James Kellett behind in third. Morgan made his car as wide as he could and kept the faster car behind him for several laps, but Kellett made a decisive move and Quinn had to settle for third place having held off the remainder of the chasing pack.

So the first podium of the season for Team GBR, and Morgan Quinn’s first GT5 Challenge silverware. The next round was at Thruxton as part of the BTCC support package, Morgan Quinn qualified 7th and had once again shown what he could do given time in the car.

A frustrating race with a red flag on the opening lap, saw Quinn drop down the order to eventually finish 10th. But race two was to be worse for the young Irishman who suffered extensive damage after being caught up in somebody else’s accident on the start-finish straight. To his credit, he carried on driving what was a very difficult car to finish 21st.

Back at GotBoost Racing HQ, the damage was surveyed and the decision was made to remove the bodywork, and send the car to Ginetta for chassis repairs. The time frame was against us, but the car was repaired in time for the next meeting at Silverstone. In a 52-car grid, Morgan Quinn found it hard to find the pace required to be upfront and had to settle for 13th on the grid.

The first of the two races of the weekend saw Morgan struggle more and more as the laps went on, eventually finishing where he started 13th. The quick turnaround meant the team had to be sharp if they were to find out what if anything had gone wrong. The data showed the ‘answer’ and the resultant simple fix. The throttle cable had been damaged in the crash and had stretched during the race preventing full throttle, now with full power returned what could Quinn do?

The answer was to finish 6th after a very polished drive he was back where he belongs, firmly in the top 10 and pushing for podiums given the opportunity.
